Stash Report 2012 - Week 5

Last week the fabric I bought when we had the snow came.  I purchased enough of the Habitat fabric for the backing and binding on the quilt.  I wanted to get the co-ordinating fabric to go with the quilt top.  Now to finish that section.

January 24th ~ 15 minutes of sewing

All ironing and mending done.  A new project started.  Need to find some other fabric for applique in my "stash" fabrics.  Then the power went out for 3 very long, cold days.  Not helpful at all.  So here is my report.

Tuesday -  ironing done
Wednesday  - went through other "stash" fabrics
Thursday - none but computer sewing work
Friday -   nothing - the power went out
Saturday -  nothing - power is still out
Sunday -   rats, nothing, power is out
Monday -  nothing - yeah the power is on!  Catching up with household chores.

Go on over to Kate's "Life in Pieces" and see how everyone else has been doing last week.

Good bye snow

We did lose our power on Friday morning. I was never a good camper. I try to look at it like an adventure, me, a pioneer women – never! I do not like living without power. I do not like not having running water. We’re on a well and can’t pump water without power. Derin has an extra horse water trough that we keep full of water in the fall and winter months for utility use here at the house.  I keep many gallon containers of fresh water on hand year around. I do not like it when the house is almost as cold as outside. Thank goodness, we have a propane fireplace. That helped the front room stay sort of warm. Derin cooked on the gas barbeque outside. What good camper he is - his hands were so cold, even with gloves on.  The roads were still icy in many places, we didn’t try going out. The neighbors behind us could not get their cars up the little hill and I didn’t want our car/truck parked on the road if we couldn’t get up our very icy driveway. Friday I was able to start a new (to me) book, but Saturday and Sunday, we had more snow and ice pellets and there wasn’t enough light by the fireplace. And then on Sunday afternoon, the wind was blowing, it was a snow/rain mix coming down and the skylight in the living room started to leak.  It leaked right on Derin, not allot but we put down the big blue plastic tarp and buckets.  We have the roofers coming Monday morning.   I miss not having the internet available, I can’t sew – woe is me, and I miss not having any TV. Whine, whine, whine. Sunday, late in the afternoon the PUD truck came then left. I almost cried as they drove away. Come back, come back – fix the power! They did about an hour later. Aaahhhh . . . the power is back on. Amazing how much we rely on electricity.

It’s Monday and the warming trend is here at last. Good-bye snow. I love a nice snowfall each year and then I am done with it for this year. In the meantime getting rid of all of this used snow is so messy, ugly. I will be glad when it is gone. I am ready to move on to Springtime.

Stash Report 2012 - Week 4

I wasn't as good this week as I was last week.  It snowed and we didn't leave the homestead.  I did very little sewing, and some reading.   I didn't get to go shopping.  Organized the sewing projects some.  Did mending and the ironing. I think that should count for something, don't you? Alas it doesn't.  Then the power went out for 3 days, they were 3 very long, cold days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.   I did let my fingers do the walking and purchased some fabric for a quilt backing and binding.  Then I saw some other fabric that I needed.  None of the fabric is here yet, I won't count it until arrives.  My numbers stay the same.

Still Snowing

It's hard to predict the weather here in the Pacific Northwest.  We are guarded by the Olympic Mountains to the west and the Cascades Mountains to the east.  Sometimes storm systems get stalled out in the Pacific Ocean and don't come in as fast as predicted, or veer to the north or south of us.  Anyway the warming trend we were expecting isn't quite here today, maybe later tonight or tomorrow.  The snow is still coming down here, but in some areas it has changed to rain or ice.   Last day for the snow - - - don't know, just so we don't loose our power.

It's Snowing!

We woke up to more snow.  This morning I watched the hummingbirds go back and forth between their feeders while I had my hot coffee.  Glad I'm not outside, looking for food, trying to stay warm.

Brrrr   ~   Very Cold!

And look at this guy getting out of the snow.  He found a good spot on the porch railing and stayed there for part of the afternoon.

Forecast for tomorrow is we start warming up to normal temperatures.     Good Bye Snow!

January 17th ~ 15 minutes of sewing

I thought the challenge of trying to spend at least 15 minutes in my sewing studio every day seemed like a really good idea.   (I still have a hard time calling it my sewing studio - why is that?)  I think if I can get just a little sewing each day that I will get more done, even if it is only mending or ironing chores.  This is the first week that I'm taking part in this challenge.  It's a start.  So here goes.

Tuesday  -  ahh, mending
Wednesday  -  nothing
Thursday  -  nothing
Friday  -  nothing
Saturday  -  stop bringing me things to be fixed!
Sunday -  ironing
Monday - organizing projects

Go on over to Kate's  "Life in Pieces" and see how everyone else has been doing last week.

Design Wall Monday - January 16, 2012

The Halloween table runner and Chloe Quilt with the geese blocks are waiting on me.  I haven't forgot either project, both project are bugging me to get back to them.  But I'm going to start on something else now, and hopefully they will both get back into the sewing line up soon.

Magic in the Air

This cute little Christmas Wall hanging is what I'm going to start making next. I've gone through my Christmas and Winter fabrics and I have found enough fabric to make this applique project with out going to the fabric store. Yippee - using some of that "collection" of fabric I have! It is called Magic in the Air . . . Wall Hanging. You can find the free instructions at BerninaUSA. It uses the OESD Magic in the Air Premier Embroidery Collection #016. The designs also include the CutWork files for the applique. Cool, huh. Just an idea - you could also make your own seasonal wall hanging up from applique designs that you have.

What are you working on?

A Snow Day

Winter is here after all!  We have snow!   I still look forward to snow like I did as a kid.  Even DH says he is excited to have snow.  He's retired!  What?  - that's right I'm sorta, kinda retired too.  O.K., we're both old and we like one nice snow fall each year.   But we don't go out and play in it anymore.  Just watch the snowflakes come down.  I like to stay inside and stay warm.

Stash Report 2012 - Week 3

I was good again this week and didn't add any new fabric to my "collection".  DH says that I have been "collecting" and not using.  I'm gonna have to change that around.  Not enough sewing during the past week to count out any fabric.  I did get some re-organization done.  However, I did buy some thread.  I love playing with the different decorative threads and yarns.  Couching, bobbin work- so much fun.  I got four spools of  Superior Threads "Halo".  It's fun to use in the bobbin or sew with.  These other two Madeira threads are new to me, I've not seen them before in variegated colors.  These are for use in the bobbin or serger.  One is the Cotona and the other is Decora #6.

Weather Vanes

Derin put up the weather vanes we bought in Bozeman, MT at an antique shop.  I'd say they are more like faux antiques, new made to look old, but they were what we were looking for.  At last he has installed them on the cupolas.  On the barn cupola there is the running horse and on the garage cupola is the eagle.  Derin had painted a quilt block with bright colors for the barn a year ago.  His moose antlers are hanging above the barn doors.

Stash Report 2012 - Week 2

This past week could have been better.   I'm finishing the financial records today, been fighting a cold to boot, so it was maybe just a little too easy to quit working on all that financial  stuff.   I didn't get any sewing done,  Zip,  Nada,  None.   It's makin' me itchy to get to my machines.

What's that in my garden?

Look at what's that growing in our garden.  It is the little shoots of garlic coming up!  We were a few weeks late in getting the garlic planted, it was November instead of mid October.  There wasn't enough garlic left over to plant from last years garlic crop.  This is the first year that we have ever ordered garlic.  We ordered from Enon Valley Garlic.  They advertise that they sell "Gourmet Garlic for Gardeners and Chefs" and we bought several varieties of garlic.  We'll let you know what we think of the varieties we purchased.

The weather for January hasn't really been cold (yet)!   I know Winter just started.  I'm starting to look forward to Spring.  I ordered our sweet onion starts for Dixondale Farms.  I always order our sweet onion bunches from them early so I can be sure to get what we want.  We've had good luck with the Ailsa Craig variety.  Brought to the U.S. from the British Isles, this heirloom onion is by far the largest onion you can grow in a short growing season.  They are similar to Kelsae Sweet Giant and have the potential to produce up to an 8"+ onion.  They have stored longer than 1 month and we still have a few stored in the barn to cook and eat.

Stash Report 2012 - Week 1

I was soooo veeery goood last week.  I wanted to go sale shopping . . .  but, I resisted all of the big end of the year fabric sales.   My fingers didn't do the walking and go shopping on line either.  I didn't buy anything!  I really don't need anything as I have my fabric for upcoming projects.    I'm almost finished with all of the financial organization for 2011.  Finishing that is now the top of my list, no more treating myself to just a little sewing until it is done.  I did get just a little sewing and mending done, ironing too.   I decided the the sewing studio need to be picked up and things put away rather than have things strewn all over.  Amazing the things you find that need to be put away.   It is easier to be creative and really get to work on projects when I have room to work.   The sewing studio almost looks as good as it did here in 2010.
